Kabardino-Balkaria in the heart of the Caucasus is known for its ancient glaciers, deep gorges, and mysterious lakes. Peter Scott travels to this southern Russian republic to explore its spectacular landscapes on land, water, and even from the air. Here, rises the Bezengi Wall – the highest mountain massif in the Caucasus, often referred to as the ‘Russian Himalayas’. At its foot, Peter visits the Bezengi Glacier, the largest in the region. In the Chegem Gorge, he takes to the skies on a paraglider before diving into the Lower Blue Lake – one of the deepest karst lakes in Europe. How far can a paraglider fly? And why doesn’t the Blue Lake ever freeze, even in winter?

People working to bring the cultural heritage of their ancestors back to life lie at the heart of this film. Farid Nabiullin spent years travelling to remote villages in Tatarstan in search of horses with distinctive white manes – the last of a rare breed known as ‘celestial golden horses’. Having nearly disappeared during the Soviet era, the breed has now been revived. Today, these horses are used in traditional sporting contests: riders tame spirited mounts in the Tai Tulak challenge and test their skill in horseback archery. Zaur Tsokholov returned to his native mountain village of Chokh in Dagestan, determined to save it from fading into oblivion. With his own funds, he restored a ruined nineteenth-century building and opened the area’s first guesthouse. His initiative inspired fellow villagers to follow his lead, and Chokh has since become a destination for travellers from all over Russia. Young sailors at the Pallada children’s sailing club in the Mari El Republic build boats under the guidance of retired officer Andrey Zheludkin. In 2025 they recreated a historic vessel – a replica of an ancient Russian ushkuy – that became one of the highlights of the People's Boat Festival in Sviyazhsk. The Kumandin people – a small indigenous community in Altai – have revived an ancient festival known as Kocha-kan. According to tradition, the god of fertility descends from the heavens on this day to bless people and ensure the continuation of their lineage. The Kumandins believe that, as long as their traditions endure, their people have a future.

This time she heads to Kalmykia — the only Buddhist region in Europe. One of the region’s most striking sights is its camels. Here they are regarded as sacred. Sasha meets a camel named Fedya, who not only allows her to pet him but even happily takes his guest for a ride. Sasha arrives in Kalmykia just as the republic is celebrating Zul, a festival marking the beginning of winter and the start of the New Year. To experience the celebration properly, she visits a local family. Together they brew jomba tea with salt and butter and make the ‘boat of life’ — a traditional festive dish symbolising the continuation of the family line.
