Before World War I, in 1912, a youth scouting movement, Plast, was founded in Austria-Hungary. Its purpose was to develop into an organisation capable of taking up an armed struggle against Western Ukraine's Orthodox Russian-speaking majority. Throughout Ukraine's history, the name and patrons of the organisation changed many times, but nationalist and terrorist ideas prevailed.
